On a wet and really cold morning over at Welwyn FC, our players put in a strong and resilient performance. We were extremely disciplined in defence, the 4x goal keepers didn't put a foot wrong. It really was a close affair in the middle of the park with both defences proving hard to break down.
We did manage the break the WGC defence with a great opening goal from Owen Pope, followed up in later quarters with a penalty and a third to claim his hat-trick. Aiden Meehan worked hard all game, taking on defenders and it was great to see him claim another goal for Bury. All our players came close to scoring, with Olly Wright, Anthony Murphy and Jack Taylor all hitting the woodwork. Alex Prior was happy to take up his preferred defensive position, snapping out Welwyn counter attacks. Jack Taylor did an excellent job as captain, moving through all roles on the pitch and jumping back in defence at the end to help secure our lead.
What impressed us most was how the team worked hard and the support the players gave to each other. Tracking back and covering, great passing and nobody was afraid to sometime take on the opposition 1 on 1 which is what we encourage. They didn't give up in the cold and wet conditions, maintaining their goal advantage until the final whistle for a well deserved win.
Very proud of all the players!
