A fine brace from Lois Ruane, an own goal and an unstoppable penalty from Annalie Wood earned the girls a win vs Pro-Direct Academy's classy U15s.
We welcomed a number of potential new signings into the squad for this friendly fixture, ahead of our team's move to pastures new for next season. All the girls did brilliantly and battled their way back into the game after finding themselves 2-0 down to the well-drilled and skilful U15 side. Lois pulled one goal back with a powerful strike from an acute angle just before Pro:Direct made it 3-1. The game was being played in quarters to facilitate player rotation and frequent fluid breaks.
Going into the final 20 minute quarter, the girls had a lot of work to do if they were to avoid defeat. The deficit was reduced early in the final quarter after a well taken corner from Sophie Evans was deflected in off an unfortunate defender. Lois then levelled with a long-range effort across goal from the right edge of the penalty area, which found the bottom left corner of the Pro:Direct goal. With the U16s piling on the pressure late in the game, an infringement in the box earned the U16s a chance to take a dramatic late lead from the penalty spot with only seconds remaining. Annalie stepped up and gave the keeper no chance, firing her spot kick in off the underside of the crossbar in the top right corner.
Both sides congratulated each other warmly at the final whistle in what was a thoroughly entertaining match.
Well played girls!
