Football in a Hurricane
By Simon Standing
Storm Erik Causing Havoc
A difficult day for football. The pitch was totally exposed and the wind was hurricane strength blowing from one goal to the other. Awful conditions to play in, especially at youth level. It was obvious that kicking with the wind would present an insurmountable advantage.
We had the wind in the first half but conceded a soft goal early on due to a lack of pressure on the ball. After that, we came alive and we were camped in Hitchin's half. Despite several chances, we didn't score despite some excellent play.
In the second half it was vital that we were able to retain the ball and catch Hitchin on the break. In the first ten minutes we were excellent again and nearly scored, playing some neat football. Then tiredness set in and a physically stronger Hitchin took over. The second goal was a cross/shot that looped over Jodie (caught by the wind), hit a post and went in. The third goal was one of only two clear chances Hitchin created all game.
Special mention to Ilana who made her debut - she was full of energy and good running.
Poppy Ruane - was player of the match, Poppy kept possession well in the second half and was first to every challenge
